Understanding How to Handicap Home Field Advantage in MLB Games

The Kings took out four of them on the way to the Stanley Cup. Similar to the NBA, hockey's postseason includes 16 of the 30 teams, making for 15 playoff series each season. What made the 2011 New York Giants' Super Bowl victory even more impressive?

Hence, there were 70 postseason series and two wild-card games from 2003 through 2012. When it’s a poor road team traveling to take on a strong home squad, the edge on the odds board may be even more pronounced; however, it could go the other way if the situation is reversed. Home field is factored into the sports betting odds, but you still need to take the time to figure out how much — if any — of an edge that it will result in. Regardless of which decade you analyze, home-field advantage in baseball has remained at right around 8%.

What Are The World Series In Baseball?

Home-field advantage is enacted by scheduling four of the possible seven games at the advantaged team’s home stadium. In order to qualify for the MLB playoffs, a team must secure one of the ten available spots during the regular season. For team-based sports, there’s typically a home side and an away side. It’s common knowledge that the team that doesn’t have to do any traveling has a slight advantage heading into the contest. Some venues are traditionally more difficult for visitors to play in as a result. As examples, consider home games for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL at CenturyLink field, or for college basketball’s Duke Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The extra stolen bases indicate that reaction time may also be playing a role. All of these numbers together indicate a large significance of mental aspects that are not quite emotional but that affect things like eyesight, reaction time, and learning about the home turf. That pretty much answers the question of what home teams are doing better. Official scorers, or so the accusation goes, give the home team credit for hits more often while recording as errors close calls involving road players. This may or may not be true, but it is highly doubtful that the reverse is true. Therefore, that home teams reach on error in 1.46 percent of their balls in play, and road teams on 1.42 percent implies that players on the road are fielding more poorly.

How CBT has impacted the MLB offseason

I decided to look at intradivision matchups for three-game and four-game series involving both closer than average distances and further than average distances. Those matchups have an 11.8 percent home-field advantage, though in a sample of just 254 games. This also highlights another important fact, which is that crowd support is unlikely to be the primary cause of home-field advantage, since one would expect a smaller home-field advantage in a mixed-fan crowd. This did not seem to surprise the Philadelphia media all that much. The Phillies had a regular-season home-field advantage of only 4.9 percent in 2008, and in the previous four years they had home-field “advantages” of 6.2, —3.7, 4.9, and —2.5 percent. Relative to how they performed on the road, the Phillies played much worse at home than did other teams.

It is easy to dismiss these effects as minor, considering how they are often small compared to the effects of talent, but their existence is clear. The psychology of the crowd may not be what is driving home-field advantage, but it is apparent that they will continue to enjoy its effects. Home-field advantage does not appear to be very team-specific. Other measures of statistical consistency imply that the effect all other teams experience when playing at home does not vary much from team to team. However, there are many indications that individual players see noticeable home-field effects. This could be a psychological issue as well, whereby road teams can generate the adrenaline to overcome some home-field advantage in the first and last game of the series but lose their steam in the middle games.

Teams that Benefit the Most From Home Field Advantage in Baseball

The good news -- or bad news for those with a fetish for the lamentation -- is that edge typically enjoyed by the home squadron figures to be quite muted in 2020. For the Red Sox, who scored nearly one full run per game more at home than on the road, perhaps it would be helpful to play more games at Fenway Park. At the same time, they allowed .81 fewer runs on the road than at home, so the impact there may not be as great as perceived. The 2013 Red Sox didn't quite take advantage of their home-field in the same way. They lost Game 1 of the ALCS at home to the Tigers before taking two of three in Detroit and wrapping up the series with a win back home in Game 6.

how does home field advantage work in mlb

Two seasons ago, the Astros pulled out a road win in the 40th “winner-take-all” game in World Series history. Home teams in World Series “winner-take-all” scenarios now own an overall losing record of after the Cubs and Astros won two of the past three World Series in Game 7’s on the road. As noted, the reasonable assumption is that the presence of fans -- densely packed and making themselves heard -- is the driver here.

You’ll find strong teams against the spread or on over/under and others who are weak in both regards, for example. When it comes to records for teams in home or away settings, the same patterns can develop. We’ll be answering those questions and many more in our deep dive into what is a home-field advantage. There’s also greater park unfamiliarity when playing across leagues — especially early on in the series. AL teams playing in NL parks without a DH may have to hurt their defense to get one of their best bats in the lineup.

how does home field advantage work in mlb

The National Basketball Association’s home court advantage has historically been a significant factor in determining which teams make the playoffs since its inception in 1946. The presence of a home court advantage can be extremely beneficial to a team in a sport where only a team’s record is considered to be indicative of its ability. Because this advantage usually accounts for 3-5 points, the team’s home record and road record are typically different. Because there are so many teams now playing each other on a regular basis, it is pointless to play at home. Some people believe that this advantage is still extremely valuable, especially in the playoffs, where a series could be decided by just a few games.

While in all games, the average winning percentage of any team is .500, its winning percentage goes up to .530 at home, and down to .470 on the road. Given so much research that consistently shows weak psychological and contextual effects, to see this large effect is refreshing. When you remove an average hitter from a lineup and replace him with a replacement-level player, you may lower home-field advantage only a little more than 1 percent. The effect of home-field advantage is so large that you are better off playing your third starter against your opponents’ ace in your home park than you are the other way around. Effects of familiarity and distance appear to be the primary drivers of home-field advantage, though other factors may be at play. Knowing how large these effects indicates that there is much to be learned from understanding context in baseball.

how does home field advantage work in mlb

I suspected that the reason that the last game of the series may have a smaller home-field advantage is that it is more likely to be a day game, and therefore I suspected that road teams would have less of a disadvantage. However, Sunday games have larger home-field advantages than do Thursday games— which would probably not be true if night games are a cause of home-field advantage. My belief is that there is not only a travel-hangover effect but a different effect based on distance traveled, in addition to a “time away from home” effect. Home teams really do tend to do better in those middle games with an off day before the series, and away teams tend to do worse in middle games with an offday before the series. Although traveling earlier might help away teams get past jetlag during the earlier part of the series, it seems that, the longer the series goes, the more tired they get.

What is the home field advantage?

We examine divisional matchups and both intra- and interleague matchups in an attempt to learn more about home-field advantage. In doing so, we know that we do not need to worry about certain teams tricking us into reaching inaccurate conclusions, since it does not appear that the other 29 teams in MLB exhibit or enjoy any special home-field advantage. It is clear that home-field advantage affects each type of batted ball. It does not affect the batting average on line drives very much, but it certainly does affect the isolated slugging average on them. There are more triples than doubles, and there are a good deal more home runs as well (2.5 versus 2.0 percent).

However, without any more information, it is difficult to tell if the walks and strikeouts are only the products of home effects on hitters. For instance, it may be that, given enough time to prepare himself to pitch, the pitcher can overcome any disadvantage of being on the road while the hitter has an advantage at reacting to the baseball when at home. In other words, it is possible that travel or staying in a hotel dulls hitters’ reaction times but does not impede the pitcher’s effectiveness. That is why I now introduce the fourth true outcome— the neglected one on which fielders also have no effect. The baseball playoffs are the most challenging to make among the four major pro sports, simply because the fewest number of teams get in—only 10 in total.

Divisional Games

Another potential source of home-field advantage is that outfielders at home know their parks better—they know how the ball bounces off the wall, etc. Many triples are the result of balls that get away from outfielders. Therefore, it should not be surprising that the rate of triples per ball in play is 7.59 percent for home teams and only 6.44 percent for road teams. In fact, the rate of doubles on balls in play for home teams is 6.81 percent, and 6.74 for away teams, a difference that is not even statistically significant . The reason is that so many extra-base hits get away from outfielders and turn into triples; the ratio of doubles to triples is 9.0 for teams at home and 10.5 for those on the road.

That’s just a shade over half of the games, so there wasn’t a massive advantage for home squads in 2019. However, we have to caution that the sample size is only a single year. The home-field advantage could be more dramatic in some years. We have two pitchers that can handle the bat with Houston’s Zack Greinke and Washington’s Stephen Strasburg. However, since Strabsurg is set to pitch Game 2 in Houston and Greinke Game 3 in DC, the Nationals will have less of a potential advantage at home with the NL rules.

World Series Home-Field Advantage: The Facts!

Though a relatively small percentage of World Series reach seven games, home-field advantage is still important in the Fall Classic. We hope this guide has answered all of your questions about how the MLB playoffs work. We know that the different formats in each rounds kind of make it all confusing. For more information, be sure to check out our other baseball related blog articles. Since the 2018 season, determining home-field advantage in the World Series no longer relies on the all-star game and instead focuses on which team had the superior regular-season record.

Although this result is perhaps somewhat shocking, it simplifies some of our analysis of home-field advantage for the rest of this article. We can now look for trends without worrying that our data is contaminated with large team-specific effects. After delving into the question of what home-field advantage is and who does or does not have it, we now need to consider where it might be the strongest. Specifically, what kinds of games exhibit the largest home-field advantages?

What is the home field advantage?

But, for some reason this doesn’t appear to translate for every team. Another benefit of the wild card is that it gives clubs an opportunity to prove themselves on the national stage before their traditional opening week. For example, the Arizona Diamondbacks used 2010's wild card as a springboard to win the NL West title the following season.

Nevertheless, the Giants eliminated the Reds, while the Nationals lost to the wild-card-winner Cardinals, thus giving San Francisco home-field advantage for the NLCS. Of course, interleague games may also have an extra home-field advantage, since the DH is in place only in AL ballparks and not in NL ballparks . Therefore, it is worth looking at different kinds of interleague games to determine the magnitude of this effect. I took the 27,613 regular-season games from 1998 through 2008 that did not result in a tie and divided them into a variety of subsets to evaluate the different magnitudes of home-field advantage.

Who gets home field advantage in the MLB tiebreaker?

The team with the most wins during the regular season will be given hosting privileges for the 2021 Fall Classic. Basketball's playoffs are made up of 16 teams overall—that's more than half the league, by the way—which is more than both MLB and the NFL. That means there are a whopping 15 series every season for a total of 150 over the past 10. Late in every baseball season, fans of contending teams dream of deep October runs and begin to wonder how the World Series home-field advantage might affect their hopes for a championship. In all sports, there’s at least some advantage for the home side, and it will vary by the strengths of the respective teams.

When one of the best teams in a league is playing at home, they could have more of an edge when a lesser foe is coming to town. Exactly how much of an edge should be applied is a hot topic of debate in sports betting circles. As demonstrated in our walkthrough of seven major sports, the home side won more often than not over one recent season. At the top, the answer is yes, Illinois sportsbooks are factoring in the home field before setting the numbers, along with every other possible variables. In general, a strong home favorite may get an extra bump for being in familiar surroundings, while the impact may not be as high if the road team is also among the better clubs.

How much is home field advantage worth in sports betting?

Because of COVID-19, no fans will be in the seats for MLB games in 2020, at least for the start of the season. Maybe at some point, certain ballparks in certain states open up to partial capacity seating, but given the recent trends of the virus that seems unlikely. Even if things do open up to a limited extent, the "fan effect" will surely be attenuated when it comes to its capacity to rattle visiting players and predispose the authority figure behind the dish. The 2012 Giants, in this instance, relate best to the Red Sox, as their record left them four games behind Washington and three games behind Cincinnati. It was different then, as the first year of the wild-card game meant that the ALDS went with the first two games at the lower seed and the final three games at the higher seed.

how does home field advantage work in mlb

Even for teams that are from different leagues, play near each other, and play each other relatively often, home-field advantages are low. Indications are that the last game of the series tends to show the smallest home-field advantage, though more so in the past than now. However, there is some indication that the first game of a series has a smaller home-field advantage than do the middle games, particularly when teams are from cities near each other. This could result from a variety of causes, such as home teams adjusting more quickly than do away teams as the series progresses, but the reason remains unclear.

The team with the best regular-season winning percentage will be awarded hosting privileges for the 2021 Fall Classic. This year’s Fall Classic was a one-of-a-kind series, as the Astros and Nats played seven games at Nationals Park. It was also the first time the Fall Classic was played at only one stadium since 1944. As a result, the World Series has reverted to the best winning percentage format of home-field advantage.

So, yes, the All-Star Game does affect who gets to play at home in the playoffs but not which team wins the division or league championship. In the NBA, teams that qualify for the playoffs are seeded based on their record. The team with the best record receives a bye into the second round. If these were football teams, they would be given an automatic spot in the next round. But since there is only one game per night, they must make do with what they've got.

What Is The Wild Card Game?

And dating back to 1995, after the strike and realignment, teams with home-field advantage have won only 52% of League Division Series (52-48). Meanwhile, teams with home-field advantage in the World Series have become champions over 59% of the time since 1925. As for the umpiring part of things, it's largely reducible to ball and strike calls by the plate ump. There's compelling evidence that umps call those balls and strikes with a modest but very real bias toward the home team. It's the residue of an unconscious dynamic that comes from wanting to pacify the braying throngs of fans in the seats.

None of these samples is large enough to generate statistical significance for any individual series game, but it’s plausible that the effect may occur the day before getaway day. If it does, is there something about travel days and off days that played a role? They might give teams the opportunity not only to settle themselves earlier in a different city but also to reset their rotation. These five years made sense as an initial starting point for looking at home-field advantage, because team composition does not change as drastically over five years as it does over a longer span. However, it is worth checking whether this does hold true over a span.

How Much Does Home-Field Advantage Actually Matter In MLB Postseason? CBS Boston

Claims that crowds in different ballparks or that certain kinds of teams tend to generate a home-field advantage are below the threshold of statistical measurability. It is probably true that, if you get a ground-ball pitcher or a power hitter in a small ballpark, you are likely to increase your home-field advantage some, but these effects are probably extremely minor. It takes a long time for the difference between two similar percentages to show any kind of consistent trend, so we should be wary when approaching, after the fact, explanations for why certain teams have home-field advantages. There has been a tendency historically for domed home teams to do well in domed stadiums, for example, but most similar explanations will not hold water. I selected strikeouts, walks, and home runs as the initial tests, because they indicate that the pitcher is involved. The significance of home runs, which pitchers control less than they do walks and strikeouts, indicates that the hitter also must be doing something better at home.

And in the 2017 MLB playoffs, the home team won 63% of the time. It tells us that home field advantage is a real thing and it can have a significant impact on the outcome of a series. There are a number of factors that contribute to home field advantage in baseball. Players are more comfortable playing in their home stadium and they know the ins and outs of the field better than their opponents. A team’s home crowd can give them a boost by cheering them on and making it difficult for the opposing team to concentrate.

In football, the most common number used for the home field in both the NFL and NCAAF is a field goal, or 3.0 points, for the home side. However, closer inspection through the years has found that number may be too much in most cases, while the number should be more pronounced in others. Action Network makes no representation or warranty as to the accuracy of the information given or the outcome of any game or event. I imagine they may rotate based on matchups but it’s something to keep an eye on as they do have a decent number of options. With something like that, it's impossible to separate correlation and causation, but it seems likely that the PNC Park crowd had at least a little something to do with Johnny Cueto's tribulations on that night. That means the A's and Mariners in 2019 traveled enough to circle the entire globe twice.

Welcome to October: Postseason guide for fans

The solution was to give World Series home-field advantage to the league that won the All-Star Game. The American League won the first seven All-Star Games under this new system and had home-field advantage in the Fall Classic in 11 of the 14 seasons under that arrangement. The World Series is a best-of-seven series, so the participants play each other anywhere from four to seven times to determine the champion. This is a best-of-seven series that will determine which teams are going to compete in the World Series for a chance to win the ultimate MLB title of World Champions.

However, home-field advantage is perhaps the most obvious area where we see something resembling a psychological effect, or at least an effect that is not captured by our typical models of baseball players and ballgames. It is clear that something about being the home team trumps talent in a way that is mathematically equivalent to letting the away team’s best player compete for the home team. That was, thankfully, a one-time only phenomenon as publicly available vaccinations for COVID-19 allowed MLB stadiums to return to full capacity again in 2021. Home-field advantage rules now return to the "best winning percentage" format that was previously installed for the first time in 2017. Hosting privileges for the 2021 Fall Classic will go to the team with the best regular-season winning percentage. That means the American League champion Houston Astros will have home-field advantage over the National League champion Atlanta Braves for this year's World Series, which begins Tuesday night.

Will home-field advantage exist in MLB's shortened and fan-less 2020 season?

In 2006, the New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, making them the only home team to win all October long. The new system is about as fair as baseball can offer and not something we have to worry about anymore while watching the All-Star Game. Jonathan Roussel is a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and Indigo League champion. He now chases the dream to become a part-time Jedi Master like Gandalf. He means to reach his goals by sleeping 14 hours a day and eating pineapple pizzas.

how does home field advantage work in mlb

Batters struck out in 16.35 percent of their plate appearances at home from 1998 through 2008 and in 17.30 percent of their plate appearances on the road. Batters received unintentional walks in 8.38 percent of their plate appearances at home and in 7.80 percent of their plate appearances on the road. Both pairs of numbers are statistically significant at the 99.9 percent level. This immediately indicates that a home-field advantage occurs within the strike zone. Somewhere between when the pitcher starts his windup and when the batter swings, home teams already gain an advantage over road teams. The first step is to figure out what exactly home teams are doing better.

NBA teams against evenly matched opponents won 62 percent of their home games. All of that provides some encouragement for the Red Sox, whose road record (46-35) is only a game off from their home record (47-34). Beating Cleveland is far from an impossibility, just as a Blue Jays or Orioles win over Texas shouldn't be considered unrealistic. If that happens, the Red Sox would find themselves with home-field advantage in the ALCS and, if they were to make it so far, the World Series, thanks to Bud Selig's cockamamie rule that for some reason is still in place. Their opponent in that World Series, the Detroit Tigers, made it there without the benefit of home-field advantage at all.

For a quick and easy answer, it’s better to start on the low side for both sports and adjust as needed. If there’s not much of a difference between the two teams squaring off, then the smaller home advantage factor should do the trick. In a case in which there’s a distinct advantage for a home side that’s playing a weak team, the higher end of the spectrum could be in order. Beyond the crowd noise, travel circumstances could be a factor, such as an East Coast team traveling out West or vice versa, or an inclination for calls to break in the direction of the home side. Let’s take a look along with some essential home advantage statistics.

This isn’t an easy question to answer, but it is an important question to ask when considering betting on baseball. Because MLB betting doesn’t involve a point spread it’s not as easy for us to establish a baseline for what home field advantage is worth. Wins, not winning margins are more important when you are betting on the moneyline, so how can we quantify a true home field advantage to increase our winning percentage.

how does home field advantage work in mlb

However, in the more than 7,500 three-game series, we still see a slight effect in the middle game. The effect is not quite statistically significant but does show up as a slightly more than 1 percent larger home-field advantage in the second game of a three-game series. Therefore, when analyzing home-field advantage, we should remember that every team except the Rockies has pretty much the same home-field advantage.

The National League had a 3-1 lead over the American League in the ninth inning before Alfonso Soriano hit a three-run homer off of Greg Maddux to win it for the AL. There is no specific reason why home ice advantage is important in baseball or basketball. This current format was only installed in 2017, and there have actually been four different sets of World Series home-field advantage rules in the 21st century alone.

Now that true home-field advantage is back, how much of a difference does it make? Unlike in MLB, however, those latter two seasons mark the only times that road teams won more series than the home teams. Part of the reason for this, to be sure, is that there are now one-game "series" as well as two five-game sets where other sports have seven-gamers. Let's keep that small sample size argument in mind as we move onto football, where the postseason is made up entirely of one-game matchups.

The only thing is the scheduled cleaning is once a week and I think they may need it a little more often. I have been overall very pleased with Autumn care and with Brenda the administrator, they helped make this as painless as possible. I like that If you have one parent that needs memory care and one that doesn't, they don't have to separate them.

Best Whole House Water Filter Systems 2022

One can say goodbye to lead, chlorine, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, fluoride, and other substances in the water. Everyone needs a water filter company they can trust, taking extraordinary measures to ensure the highest possible product quality. That is why well-informed consumers only get the best NSF certified water filter. The certification is a modern consumer’s guarantee of a water filter’s performance and quality. I had switched to Pottasium Chloride and programmed according to directions. When the installer came he said homeowners should not use pottassium chloride, but he would not say that the use of pottassium chloride would cause the problem. Finally it dawned on me the charcoal particulate in the WHESFC Pro was the problem! I contacted Lowes/Morton/ecowater and they asked for proof that I had purchased and used the cleaner and I shared all the dated receipts, and they honored the warranty. I bought this through Lowes in Dec 2017 and it was installed in Jan 2018. At first it was great – worked as advertised and I would have given it a 5 star rating.

Filter Capacity

The 100,000 gallon filter capacity might not live up to its billing as some customers have said their filter did not last that long. How long a filter lasts can depend on usage, water conditions and other factors. Simply pour the EcoPure EPCL water softener cleaner into the EPHS all-in-one water softener and filter every four months to keep things running smoothly. The system features demand-initiated regeneration, meaning it will only regenerate when hardness levels rise and your water usage requires it. The GE GXSH40V Water Softener is our top choice for a water softener for a typical household.

It took me a while to do the study about how to choose a good water softener and understand the chain of water treatment process from filter to softener to RO. My old Kenmore model was left by previous homeowner without proper functionality for many years. You might like the rustic look, but that doesn’t mean you like the look of rust. Prevent rust stains in your toilet, tub and sink with a Water Softener.

I also bought a Reverse Osmosis System for under the sink. The installation instructions for the RO system are terrible, and for the WH system very marginal And don’t buy the installation kit for the WH system, that would have been useless. The instructions in the manual and online don’t really seem to walk an “amateur” through the operation of this water softener. We recently had this water softener installed after buying it at Home Depot. Given the complexity of our heating and plumbing system we had a plumber install this and he did a fine job and it seems to work OK. My husband did all the plumbing, hooked up the softener and went to test the lines.

It replaced a salt-based system and I am thrilled not to have to pay for salt or lug those heavy bags around any longer. The system will pay for itself without the cost of salt in about 5 years. I was concerned that the displacement of the resin bed tank could have caused damage to the tank neck and may have caused leakage. (GE customer service, please add on a description about what is normal position of the resin bed tank and whether the neck was installed already or not. The electronic control board was not “mounted” on the softener. It was just laying loose on the top but still had the 2 wire connections holding on.

After about a day of being in service I discovered my copper line connections to the bypass valve supplied by EcoPure was leaking. After some studying the problem I noticed the bypass valve supplied by EcoPure had one slight variation from the original Sears bypass. Before installing a water softener, anyone with high blood pressure should consult with a doctor.

Customers have reported issues with the canister and the bypass relief valve breaking down. If you’re looking for top-of-the-line water softening and filtration system, then the Whirlpool WHESFC Pro Series Softener/Whole Home Filter Hybrid is the perfect choice for you. This system is a great value, and it is a great investment for your home. After a couple years of renting the house we live in, we decided to buy it. Just before we bought it, the dishwasher went out due to the insanely hard water in San Antonio. Shortly thereafter, the hot water heater went out – same issue.

While this is not an NSF 401 certified water filter, its NSF 42 and NSF 372 qualifications can still provide me with peace of mind. Nevertheless, one should consider buying this NSF-certified tap water filter because of its elegant design, longevity, and exceptional filtration performance. I also like the addition of a pre-filter, removing as many large particles as possible. I love its 320-gallon filter capacity, lasting up to three months in most cases.

This system had always been at the top of my list but because it is expensive I had been hoping to find a cheaper equivalent.
